ICD-10 Codelink Database
The purpose of the ICD-10 CodeLink Database is to provide healthcare professionals and students with a convenient, efficient and inexpensive coding tool with reference documents for guidance and learning.
Physicians, medical coders and billers, medical office managers, coding instructors, students and many others in the healthcare industry will benefit from having the ICD-10 CodeLink Database on their computer.
At the core of ICD-10 are the codes themselves and the expanded scope from ICD-9-CM.
The ICD-10-CM data files are available from the CMS (Centers for Medicare Services) website. The NCHS (National Center for Health Statistics) website offers the code set also. Printed code books and online code lookup websites contain the information as well.
It is a reasonable expectation that the ICD-10 data sources are efficient and economical to use and also, that they contain complete and correct information!
Unfortunately, this is not the case…
- The ICD-10 data files from CMS are difficult to navigate, are inefficient and time-consuming when searching for information.
- Multiple files or books are needed to access information across the 2 classification systems.
- GEM (General Equivalency Mapping) files need to be incorporated into a database to be useful.
Online code lookup websites often display codes only and do not contain critical additional information necessary for correct code selection.
There needs to be an efficient and inexpensive ICD-10 resource as healthcare professionals utilize the new classification system.
The ICD-10 CodeLink Database compiles the numerous disjointed data files into one source. Having easy access to all the data files allows for correct and efficient interaction with the ICD-10-CM classification system.
The source documents for the ICD-10 CodeLink Database are from the CMS and NCHS websites:
www.cms.gov/Medicare/Coding/ICD10/2017-ICD-10-CM-and-GEMs.html and
http://www.cms.gov/Medicare/Coding/ICD9ProviderDiagnosticCodes/codes.html
The ICD-10 CodeLink database contains the ICD-10-CM and General Equivalency Mapping (GEM) files for 2017.
- Alphabetic Index
- External Causes of Injury Index
- Neoplasm Table
- Table of Drugs and Chemicals
- Tabular List of ICD-10 Chapters
- GEM files (both 'backward' and 'forward' mapping) with complete code descriptions.
- ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
- GEM Guidelines
Benefits of the ICD-10 CodeLink Database
By compiling all the data files into a spreadsheet database, grouping Index main terms and employing hyperlinks, ICD-10-CM code lookup and search time is greatly reduced.
Complete code information is accessed in seconds!
The ICD-10 CodeLink database was created using Excel 2010 for PC and is in binary format (.xlsb)
- Excel 2007+ is needed to download and view this spreadsheet version of the code set
- MAC users should download the Sample Database as a test for compatibility with Excel for MAC
The ICD-10 CodeLink Database is easy to navigate
- Click on the + sign to the left of Index entries to expand the group
- Click on the - sign to the left of Index main terms (or the solid line) to collapse the group
- Click on underlined blue codes to hyperlink or 'jump' to a specific code destination
- Use worksheet navigation arrows in the bottom-left hand corner of the Excel window to move to a specific worksheet
- Press the 'Home' key to go to the top of a worksheet
